Course introductionThe aim of the course is to provide the students with knowledge of and skills in elementary inorganic chemistry at such a level that this knowledge can support the learning and understanding of subsequent courses in inorganic chemistry. The aim of the laboratory part is to provide the students with broad knowledge of the elements’ most important compounds and their reactions, as well as fundamental laboratory skills.
Expected learning outcomeAt the end of the course the student is expected to be able to:
- Classify the chemical elements according to the periodic system.
- Apply this classification to predict important properties of chemical compounds, including stability, solubility, redox properties and reactivity.
- Identify a given inorganic compound based on a series of analytical reactions.
- Argue for the suggested identification.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None
Assessment and marking:
Oral exam. Danish 7 mark scale, external examiner.
Reexamination in the same exam period or immediately thereafter. The mode of exam at the reexamination may differ from the mode of exam at the ordinary exam.
Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 17 hours
Skills training phase: 34 hours, hereof:
- Tutorials: 10 hours
- Laboratory exercises: 24 hours
