Academic preconditions:
Students taking the course are expected to follow or have followed the course “Innovation project”. In the course tools within the SDU e-learning system will be utilized. Hence, participation in the course requires the student to be able to use these.
Course introductionThe aim of the course is to enable the student to reflect on correlations between societal challenges, chemical technology and innovation as well as illustrate how professional chemical knowledge can be applied in sustainable manners, which is important in regard to apply chemical knowledge for the creation of “green” technologies in both research and industrial projects.
The course interplays with knowledge acquired in the course “NAT511 Innovation Project”.
In relation to the competence profile of the degree it is the explicit focus of the course to:
- Give the competence to put innovation into a technical context as well as illustrate coherences between innovation, chemistry and society.
- Give skills within innovation and applied use of the professional competences within chemistry obtained during the study
- Give knowledge and understanding of future technological and societal challenges where chemistry can be put to use.
Expected learning outcomeThe learning objective of the course is that the student demonstrates the ability to:
- Account for societal and technological challenges based on specific cases
- Account for the importance of innovation in relation to the solution of technological challenges
- Describe the general concepts in innovation processes and their relevance for scientific innovation
- Illustrate possibilities for applied use of theoretical knowledge
Subject overviewThe following main topics are contained in the course:
- Innovation processes and types/degrees of innovation
- Green technology, energy technology, sustainability, catalysis, nanotechnology, food technology, food safety, clean drinking water, waste management etc.
- Patents, novelty evaluation and patent application
- Circular economy, corporate social responsibility and scientific social responsibility

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
- Active participation in discussions and excursions. Internal evaluation by teacher, pass/fail.
Assessment and marking:
- Written report. Internal evaluation by teacher, pass/fail. (2,5 ECTS). (10010202).
Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 5 hours
Skills training phase: 20 hours, hereof:
- Tutorials: 10 hours
- Excursion: 10 hours
Educational activities
- Self-study of the course material e.g. articles and videos
- Preparation for the tutorial sessions hereunder analysis of selected technologies for the solution of global challenges and novelty evaluation
- Independent repletion of the intro- and training phase
- Application of the course elements in relation to the course “NAT511 Innovation Project”
Educational formThe intro phase consists of lectures, wherein dialog is created through short discussions. The lectures deal with innovation concepts and processes, global challenges, patents and novelty evaluation etc. The skill training phase strengthens knowledge and competences within the central parts, e.g. through group work on selected global challenges, novelty evaluation and discussion of selected cases. The topics of the course can be applied in the course “NAT511 Innovation Project”. It will also be possible for the students to work on their NAT511 project within this course, e.g. in relation to novelty evaluation.
Language
This course is taught in Danish or English, depending on the lecturer.
