Academic preconditions:
KE512 (quantum chemistry/inorganic chemistry) must be passed.
Course introductionThe aim of the course is to acquire knowledge about the structure of inorganic compounds, properties and reactions at an advanced level.
Expected learning outcomeAt the end of the course the student is expected to master:
• assignments of electronic transitions in transition metal complexes
• calculations of magnetic moments in transition metal complexes.
• be able to suggest reasonable geometrical structures for transition metal complexes (including organometallic compounds).
• be able to suggest reaction mechanisms for the most important substitution and redox reactions involving transition metal complexes (including organometallic compounds).
Subject overviewFundamental principles of the structure and reactivity of coordination compounds. Ligand field theory, interpretation of electronic spectra and magnetic properties of transition metal complexes. The mechanism of substitution and redox reactions. Organometallic chemistry including applications in catalysis. Selected topics from solid state chemistry. Synthesis and characterization of a series of inorganic compounds. The following methods will be used in the characterization:
UV-visible spectroscopy, NMR, Cyclic Voltammetry, Electron spin resonance (ESR). X-ray-diffraction.
