Academic preconditions:
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, nanobioscience, pharmaceutical sciences or chemical engineering (BEng).
Course introductionTo introduce the participants to a number of modern spectroscopic techniques and to demonstrate the application of already known techniques to analytical problems within polymer chemistry, medicinal chemistry, materials chemistry, biochemistry and archaeometry.
Expected learning outcomeHaving completed the course the student is expected to be able to
- In general terms give an account of the principles for and the experimental method of the spectroscopic methods included in the course
- Interpret experimental data acquired my means of these spectroscopic methods
- Read and give an oral account of and relate critically to recent scientific literature concerning the application of these methods
- Explain the application of various spectroscopic methods within the fields of polymer chemistry, medicinal chemistry, materials chemistry, biochemistry and archaeometry
- Discuss and assess applicability and relevance of the various methods for clarification of a specific issue.
Subject overviewESR spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, atomic absorption and emission spectroscopy, infrared reflection spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None
Assessment and marking:
The students will present selected periodical articles and chosen chapters in monographs.
Approval of laboratory exercises on a passed/not passed basis, internal evaluation by lecturer.
Re-examination after 2nd quarter.
