Prerequisites:
None
Academic preconditions:
Fundamental chemistry (KE501) - or FF503, Analytical spectroscopy (KE504) and Organic Chemistry (KE505) must be passed.
Course introductionThe students should obtain practical skills in separating substance mixtures by using modern separation and purification techniques and obtain practical skills in identifying and determining the functional groups of organic substances. Through identification of IR, MS and 1H and 13C NMR spectra the students should be trained in practical analytical molecular spectroscopy including the interpretation problems implied in the fact that substances could be impure or poorly separated
Expected learning outcome
- Use chemical methods for identification of organic compounds.
- Use spectroscopic methods for identification of organic compounds.
- Use chemical and column chromatographic separation techniques.
- Carry out small scale chemical reactions.
- Find reference data on-line.
- Knowledge of gas chromatography and HPLC.
- Estimate purity of a chemical sample.
Subject overviewSeparation of substance mixtures by extraction and preparative column chromatography. Preparation of derivatives. Determination of functional groups and equivalent weight. HPLC and GLC analysis. Identification by MS, 1H and 13C NMR and IR spectra.
