Kommentar: Samlæses med kurset XC-MSC1-U1 Basic Solid State Chemistry, der udbydes af Institut for Kemi- Bio- og Miljøteknologi (KBM), Det tekniske fakultet.
Prerequisites:
The inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry courses of the Bachelor (Science or Engineering) degree programme. International students should refer to the admission requirement form.
Academic preconditions:
None
Course introductionThe student should be able to understand and use:
- equilibrium phase diagrams for unary, binary and ternary systems.
- crystallographic information concerning simple crystal structures.
- Kröger-Vink notation.
- essential thermodynamic and structural principles concerning crystal defects, non-stoichiometry and solid solutions at a rudimentary level.
- essential physical and chemical principles concerning the optical, magnetic, and electrical properties of inorganic materials at a rudimentary level.
QualificationsThe student should be able to:
- select and manipulate the properties of inorganic materials for specific uses or applications.
- participate in general discussions concerning the chemistry of inorganic materials.
Expected learning outcomeThe student should be able to:
- use the thermodynamic databases: HSC Chemistry and ACerS-NIST.
- draw and comprehend illustrations of simple crystal structures using the ICSD and ATOMS© software.
- interpret, index and simulate powder X-ray diffraction patterns of simple cubic phases.
Subject overviewThis course includes a series of lectures and exercises that cover the basic aspects of solid state chemistry. The course shows how knowledge of phase relationships, crystal structure, chemical bonding and crystal defects enable the optical, magnetic and electrical properties of inorganic materials to be understood and manipulated. The subject is not taught in isolation; but overlaps with themes in solid state physics, mineralogy and ceramics.
LiteratureThere isn't any litterature for the course at the moment.
