Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
Chemistry A (KE04 / iot: K-KE04), Calculus (MM 01) must be passed.

Course introduction
The course aims at making the students familiar with the application of macroscopic thermodynamical concepts to physical-chemical problems to an extent that will enable them to understand and, if necessary, supplement a text where thermodynamical reasoning has been applied to such problems. The three laboratory exercises will support the theoretical subjects by illustrating three central topics in practice.

Expected learning outcome

Subject overview
Thermodynamical concepts (first and second law, energy, enthalpy, entropy, Helmholz functions and Gibbs functions, chemical potential, activity); evaporation, sublimation and fusion of pure substances; mixtures; colligative properties, chemical reactions and equilibria, equilibrium electrochemistry, electrochemical cells; diffusion; reaction kinetics. Laboratory exercises in vapor pressure, electrochemistry and kinetics.

Literature
  • Atkins: Physical Chemistry, 7th.ed.

Website
This course uses e-learn (blackboard).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
A 4-hour written examination with books and notes of your own choice as well as pocket calculator. External examiner. Marks according to the Danish 13-point marking scale. The three laboratory exercises are evaluated separately (passed/not passed) on the basis of individual reports. The students must pass the laboratory exercises part in order to attend the examination.

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.

24 forelæsninger og 22 eksaminatorietimer, samt 3 uger med 12 timers laboratorieøvelser.
