Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
Solid State Chemistry 1 (KF42). Knowledge of X-ray crystallographic methods and microscopy is an advantage.

Course introduction
To provide the student with experimental knowledge of the preparation, structure and properties of solid state materials.

Expected learning outcome

Subject overview
The preparation of five different ceramic materials with interesting electrical, magnetic, and optical properties by high temperature synthesis techniques. For example; a coloured glass, a ceramic superconductor, a luminescent ceramic, a magnetic ceramic and a ceramic ionic conductor. Characterization of the product material by some of the following analytical techniques including; powder X-ray diffractometry, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, electron spin resonance spectroscopy, impedance spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetry, and optical microscopy.
