Prerequisites:
None
Academic preconditions:
Solid State Chemistry 1 (KF42) must be attended.
Course introductionTo provide the student with experimental knowledge of the synthesis, structure, phase relationships and properties of solid state compounds; with an emphasis on the preparation of advanced ceramic materials.
Expected learning outcomeSubject overviewThe student prepares a selection of five materials that exhibit interesting physical properties. The materials and chemical syntheses in the course have been chosen so as to illustrate the large variety of properties encountered in ceramic materials, as well as, to provide practical experience covering a wide range of high temperature preparative methods. Examples include a superconductor, a semiconductor, a magnetic ceramic, a phosphor, a piezoelectric ceramic, and an ionic conductor, prepared by various solid-state chemical reaction, sol-gel, co-precipitation and flux methods.
