Prerequisites:
None
Academic preconditions:
The student must know the material of MM503 BioMath I as well as Danish high school mathematics (B level).
Course introductionBased on high school mathematics and the course BioMath I, this course provides the students with fundamental tools and proficiencies within the subjects: differential equations, complex numbers and vectors and matrices. The topics of the course are treated with a view towards applications in the biological sciences and to some extent with the use of the CAS Maple.
Competencies:
The students will be introduced to and trained in a number of fundamental skills related to differential equations emerging from mathematical models for biological growth etc. Having completed the course successfully, the student can be expected to:
- use single-variable calculus to establish, solve and interpret
mathematical models within the biological sciences.
- be familiar with the usage of complex numbers, vectors and matrices.
- use the CAS Maple as a tool for calculations in connection with
differentiation and integration and for solving specific differential
equations.
Expected learning outcomeSubject overview1. Differential equations and biological growth models.
2. Complex numbers, the complex exponential function, the complex quadratic equation.
3. Vectors and matrices, linear and affine mappings from R'n to R'm, systems of linear equations.
4. Applications of the CAS Maple.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None
Assessment and marking:
(a) A two hour written exam with books, notes, etc. Lap top is allowed at the exam. (The lap top can not be loud, and printer is prohibited.) External examiner, grades according to the 7-point marking scale. Re-exam after fourth quarter.
(b) A number of mandatory assignments which account for 1 ECTS of the total 5 ECTS of the course (pass/fail, internal examiner). These assignments are not part of the first year test.
Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
(a) Forelæsninger (25 timer).
(b) Eksaminatorier/opgaveregning (25 timer).
