Academic preconditions:
Basic notions from linear algebra must be known.

Course introduction
To introduce basic notions and arguments from elementary Number Theory and Ring Theory.

Qualifications
Having completed the course successfully, the students can be expected to
- be conversant with basics of abstract, axiomatic reasoning.
- understand the fundamentals concerning (whole, rational, real and complex) numbers and their properties.
- command basic algebraic methods in mathematics.

Expected learning outcome


Subject overview
The integers, congruence and modular arithmetic, rings, polynomial rings, congruence in polynomial rings, ideals and quotient rings, integral domains and factorization, fields and field extensions.

Assessment and marking:
Written exam, eksternal examiner, marks according to the 7-scale.

Examination only when the course has been taught. Examination is opposition terms only after acceptance from the study board.
