Academic preconditions:
Basic notions from linear algebra must be known.
Course introductionTo introduce basic notions and arguments from elementary Number Theory and Ring Theory.
QualificationsHaving completed the course successfully, the students can be expected to
- be conversant with basics of abstract, axiomatic reasoning.
- understand the fundamentals concerning (whole, rational, real and complex) numbers and their properties.
- command basic algebraic methods in mathematics.
Expected learning outcomeAt the end of the course, the student will be able to:
• reproduce definitions and results within the syllabus of the course
• apply the theory to solve problems within the socpe of the syllabus of the course
• argue in a mathematically correct and stringent way the steps in the solution of given problems
• supply stringent and complete proofs for statements within the syllabus of the course
• apply mathematical terminology and symbols from set theory, function theory, logic, number theory and ring theory
• identify mathematical structures within the scope of the syllabus of the course in specific examples
Subject overviewThe integers, congruence and modular arithmetic, rings, polynomial rings, congruence in polynomial rings, ideals and quotient rings, integral domains and factorization, fields and field extensions.

Assessment and marking:
Written exam, eksternal examiner, marks according to the 7-scale.
Reexamination after 4th quarter.
