The content of Rings and Number Theory, Topology B must be known.
Course introductionTo give the student an overview of the history of mathematics from ancient Civilizations to the 20th century. The course gives a more detailed insight to the following subjects: history of equations; the development of calculus; Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry.
QualificationsThe goal is that the student gains insight in the development of the mathematical theories and concepts and that this knowledge will lead to a deeper understanding of the concepts that are discussed in this course. Furthermore this knowledge will enable the student 1) to put the mathematical theories that are focused on in the course in a wider context; 2) to relate these theories to each other; and 3) to create connections between the theories.
The understanding of the development of mathematical theories will give the student insight in how mathematical theories and concepts develop, which is a step towards being able to formulate matehmatical concepts.
The use of historical sources will train the student to critically read mathematical proofs and the course thus develops the students reasoning competences.
Expected learning outcomeSubject overviewNumbers, magnitudes and real numbers. Greek geometry. History of equations. Pre -history of Calculus. The invention of Calculus: Newton and Leibniz. 18th- and 19th- Century Analysis. Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry. The development of Algebra in the 18th- and 19th- Century. Aspects of Twentieth Century mathematics.

Oral exam. Eksternal examiner. Marks according to the Danish 7-scale.
