Academic preconditions:
Students taking the course are expected to hold a Bachelor degree in Mathematics.

Course introduction
4 + 4 PhD students will after having passed the qualifying exam be awarded a Master's degree in mathematics.

Expected learning outcome
In the course, the student should demonstrate deep knowledge of one or more concrete areas within mathematics, mathematical education or philosophy of mathematics.

Competencies:
A student who has completed the qualifying exam is expected to be able to:
•Make a scientific overview of the knowledge from an area of mathematical sciences.
• Put into perspective problems arising in a selected topic, with help of mathematical methodology, reasoning and technical terms.
• Independently acquire and further develop mathematical knowledge within a selected area.
• Create new variations of the learnt methods, as needed for specific problems.
• Appropriately structure and manage execution of the project and generate outcomes commensurate with the available time. Expected learning outcome At the conclusion of the qualifying exam the student should be able to:
• Formulate problems at the current research level in mathematics, mathematical education or philosophy of mathematics.
• Plan, analyze and apply methods from mathematical sciences in order to solve the stated problems.
• Present the obtained knowledge and insight in a precise and intelligible language – in both oral and written form.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
  1. Evaluation of the report: The qualifying exam is based on a written status report of app. 30 pages, supplemented by an oral examination. This report is evaluated according to the 7-point scale and is with external censorship. (30 ECTS). (13016502).

Evaluation criteria:
The grade for the qualifying exam is determined on the basis of an assessment of both the status report and the oral examination. The assessment is based on the academic content, bearing in mind what is to be evaluated is the first two years of a 4 year research project and taking into account how these two years have been balanced between research, research planning, travel and course activity.
