All first year courses must be passed.

Course introduction
The course introduces central themes from the Philosophy of Science and discusses ethical problems that are relevant to the natural sciences. In addition the course treats the role of the subjects in society.

Expected learning outcome
After the course the student is supposed to be able to

  • reproduce central parts of the literature of the course.
  • use the notions and concepts from the course correctly.
  • relate relevant issues about the students subject to the theories presented in the course.
  • Argue for independent points of views relevant for this course.
Subject overview
The themes are introduced in general terms in lectures and will afterwards be discussed in relation to mathematics in smaller classes.
The themes are:

  • Role of university and subject in society.
  • Methods in Science.
  • Theory and Reality.
  • Ethics and Values.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
Prerequisite test consisting of project, pass/fail, internal evaluation by teacher. Requires exam protocol. The oral examination requires that the project has been passed. (13010412)

Assessment and marking:
Oral examination which starts with a presentation of the project. Thereafter the student will be examined in the rest of the syllabus. External examiner. Marks according to the 7-point grading scale. (13010402)

Reexamination in the same exam period or immediately thereafter. At the reexamination internal examiner is used.

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 14 hours
Skills training phase: 20 hours
