Course introduction
The course introduces central themes from the Philosophy of Science and discusses ethical problems that are relevant to the natural sciences. In addition the course treats the role of the subjects in society.

Expected learning outcome
After the course the student is supposed to be able to
  • reproduce central parts of the literature of the course.
  • use the notions and concepts from the course correctly.
  • relate relevant issues about the students subject to the theories presented in the course.
  • Argue for independent points of views relevant for this course.
Subject overview
The themes are introduced in general terms in lectures and will afterwards be discussed in relation to computer science in smaller classes.
The themes are:
  • Role of university and subject in society.
  • Methods in Science.
  • Theory and Reality.
  • Ethics and Values.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
(a) Project, pass/fail, internal evaluation by teacher. The oral examination requires that the project has been passed.
(b) Oral examination which starts with a presentation of the project. Thereafter the student will be examined in the rest of the syllabus. External examiner. Marks according to the 7-point marking scale.

Reexamination after 4th quarter. At the reexamination internal examiner is used.

Date of exam
The ordinary exam takes place on January 14, 2013 and January 22, 2013 and January 23, 2013
The re-examination takes place on June 28, 2013

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.

14 +3 hours of lectures and 20 lessons in smaller classes divided in the subjects mathematics, computer science, bio-sciences and physics-chemistry. In addition the participants will work for 6 hours in groups with a written project of their own choice. A passed group project gives admission to the oral exam. The project is evaluated internally, but the oral examination will take as a starting point the project.
