Course introduction
This course will present the basic techniques needed to create value (intellectual property) out of research. These techniques include how to

  1. Use standard GLP practice
    • responsibly handle data, (DB, EP type of documentation)
    • use standard operating procedures (SOP)
  2. Manage a project
    • Lean Project Management
    • PRINCE2 based project planning
  3. Introduction to patenting
    • determine what can be patented
    • understand the patent system
    • how to write and read a patent
    • how to use a patent


Expected learning outcome
On completion of the course, a student will be expected to be able to:

• Compile raw data and manipulate it in scientifically and legally acceptable manner

• Guide a project from planning to completion, paying attention to timelines and budget

• Explain the patent system and what can and cannot be patented

• Write a patent application

• Use a patent to create commercial value from research data

• Be an efficient sparring partner for a patent agent

Subject overview
Systematic data filing; GLP-procedures: DB, EP and SOPs type of documentation; Project management techniques; Working in a team; Legal requirements relating to data storage, and inventions made in public institutions; what is a patent, novelty and the inventive step; understanding patent language; the life of a patent, novelty searches using on line international databases; different types of patent and various strategies for using patents.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
Written project describing patent claims submitted for evaluation. Internal evaluator, passed/not passed. (01012112)

Assessment and marking:
Oral examination in form of project presentation. Internal evaluator, passed/not passed. (01012102)

Reexam will be held within 6 weeks of the ordinary exam.

The teaching method is based on three phase model.
