Academic preconditions:
Passed Science year’s first-year examination. Knowledge of Enzymes and Membranes (BMB502). Anatomy (SU501) is recommended.

Course introduction
To give participants
1. knowledge of the normal function of the body and the individual organs in order to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms and thus prevention and treatment of diseases and to give an understanding of qualifications necessary to help people with physial and mental well-being.
2. insight in collecting knowledge and critically estimate the information in the light of the exactness, specificity and sources of error of the applied methods.
3. a certain knowledge of physiological research.

Qualifications
By the end of the course the students can:
a) demonstrate knowledge of physiological terms and ideas in so far as it is necessary for the ongoing study.
b) explain (or hypothesise) the function of specific organs or organ systems on the basis of existing knowledge.
c) explain the control systems of the organism including the effects of disturbances of the individual organs or normal function of the organ system.
d) decribe the fundamental methods applied in physiology includigng methods applied in the clinic and be able to explain the specificity, source of error and exactness of the methods.
e) calculate and interpret methods based on data collected with physiological methods of measurement.

Expected learning outcome


Subject overview
2nd quarter (50 hours):
Function and regulation of the heart and circulation including the blood, the electric function of the heart, the pump activity, macro- and microcirculation and the regulation of the circulation. Respiratory physiology including ventilation and mechanics of the respiration, lung circulation and ventilation/perfusion ratio, transportation of gas and control of the respiration. Function and regulation of the gastrointestinal system including gastrointestinal neurophysiology, motility, secretion, digestion and absorption and liver physiology. Temperature regulation and work physiology including regulation of body temperature and physiological readjustment during work and the effect of training.

3rd quarter (50 hours):
Physiology of the endocrine organs: Importance and function of the endocrine system including general conditions concerning the secretion, mechanism of action and homeostatic function of the hormones, hypothalamus and the hypophysis, glandula thyroidea, adrenal glands and endocrine pancreas and endocrine regulation of calcium, phosphate and bone metabolism. Metabolism. Renal physiology: The excretory and homeostatic function of the kidneys. Fluid/electrolyte physiology: Composition and regulation of the fluid ???RUM??? of the organism including the metabolism of water and salts. Acid-base physiology: Metabolism and regulation of acid(s) and base(s) of the organism. Reproduction physiology: Function and and regulation of male and female reproduction systems.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
4 hour writen exam, with external censorship and grades according to the danish 7-point scale. Compulsory laboratory exercises for both 2nd and 3rd quarter must be passed before the couse is passed.

The teaching method is based on three phase model.
