Course introductionThe aim of the course it to give the students an introduction to health economic theory and methods, such that these theory and methods can be used to perform economic analyses of the pharmaceutical market and interventions introduced in this market. The student should obtain a detailed insight into the special characteristics of the pharmaceutical market including the need for regulation in order to increase efficiency, and the effect of regulatory mechanisms such as reimbursement policies and patent policies. 
QualificationsAt the end of the course the students should be able to:
• describe factors that influence the demand for pharmaceuticals, and factors the influence the equilibrium price of pharmaceuticals
• describe the health care insurance regimes and describe how different types of insurance packages can effect demand and price setting.
• discuss the need for regulating the pharmaceutical market
• asses the consequences of different reimbursement systems
• discuss how patent law provide incentives for investing in research and development of pharmaceuticals
• list the main actors in the Danish health care sector and in the pharmaceutical industry
• describe the development over time in consumptions and costs of pharmaceuticals
• describe the Danish reimbursement system
