Academic preconditions:
The content of SU503 Pharmacology and SU502 Medical Physiology is assumed known.

Course introduction
To introduce the student to pathophysiological mechanisms of diseases in the cardiovasculare and renal system, the nervous system, the immune system and to pathophysiological mechanisms of infections and neoplasms that can be affected by drugs. The students should know the mechanisms of actions of these drugs on the intact organ as well as at the cellular level. In addition, the students will be introduced to important adverse effects, drug interactions and toxic effects of the drugs.

Expected learning outcome
After having completed the course the student is expected to be able to:

• Describe and classify the mechanism of actions and effects of drugs on various intact organs and at the cellular level of these organs. The students will be able to interpret information of the mechanism of action and effects of the drugs.
• Describe and classify adverse effects, drug interactions and toxic effects of drugs and evaluate their significance.
• Describe and classify and evaluate pathophysiological mechanisms of diseases in the nervous system, the bone metabolism and pathophysiological mechanisms of infections and neoplasms that can be affected by drugs.
• Describe and explain mechanism of actions and effects of drugs used to treat diseases in the cardiovasculare and renal system, the nervous system, the immunsystem and infections and neoplasms that can be affected by drugs.
• Evaluate advantages and disadvantages of the pharmacology of drugs used to treat diseases in the nervous system and infections and neoplasms.

Subject overview
Drugs used in disorders of the cardiovascular and renal system. Drugs used in affective disorders, antipsychotic drugs, anxiolytic drugs, antiepileptic drugs, analgetic drugs, immunmodulating drugs, general and local anaesthetic drugs, drugs for Parkinson´s disease, CNS stimulants and drug addiction. Drugs used for metabolic bone disease. Drugs used in the treatment of infections and cancer.

Assessment and marking:
(a) Written exam. Danish 7 mark scale, external examiner.

Reexamination after 4th quarter.
