Course introduction
The course focuses on the algorithms employed in a few, selected areas of computational biology, and provides the students with an understanding of the state-of-the-art computational methods in the selected topics. The focus is on problems that arise in the analysis of high-throughput biological datasets. The course provides theoretical and practical skills to develop novel methods in new computational biology applications.

Qualifications
At the end of the course the students will have the following competencies:

  • knowledge of computational problems that arise in computational biology and of state-of-the-art solutions for such problems;
  • application of advanced computational techniques to the analysis of large biological datasets;
  • design of advanced methods for computational biology.
Expected learning outcome
At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to:
  • describe and assess the content of research scientific papers;
  • describe the computational problems arising in the topics presented in the course;
  • describe state-of-the-art algorithms for solving the computational problems presented in the course;
  • reflect on and assess the state-of-the-art computational methods for the topics presented in the course;
  • undertake experimental evaluation of advanced methods in computational biology and report the results;
  • assess and reflect on the experimental evaluation of algorithmic methods in computational biology.
Subject overview
Algorithms for genome sequencing; computational methods for large network analysis.
