Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
The material from MM505 Linear algebra and MM508 Topology I is assumed known.

Course introduction
To give the students a mathematical as well as practical knowledge of Fourier analysis and its applications, and to introduce the students to numerical calculations using MATLAB.

Expected learning outcome
At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to:
  • give sufficient conditions for convergence of Fourier series.
  • describe the Fourier sum as the best approximation in a orthogonal system.
  • implement filter techniques for noise reduction in digital signals.
  • describe how the 2-dimensional discrete cosine transform is used in image compression.
Subject overview
Fourier series and convergence, discrete Fourier transform (DFT), fast Fourier transform (FFT), sound, noice and filtration, discrete cosine transform (DCT), compression (JPEG), signal processing, interpolation, MATLAB.

Literature
