Course introduction
The course will teach techniques fundamental to the practice of mathematical reasoning.

Reasoning.

Expected learning outcome
At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

  • Formalise statements in a logically correct way
  • Express themselves in a mathematical precise way
  • Apply methods of proofs such as direct proof, indirect proof and proof by induction to prove statements within the syllabus of the course.Use concepts, results and techniques learned in the course on known as well as new concrete problems
  • Argue for steps in proofs and solutions of problems

  • Number theory, including divisors, primes and congruences.
  • Matrices: addition, multiplication and transpose.
  • Relations, including different representations of representations, closures, order- and equivalence relations.

Assessment and marking:
  1. Mandatory assignments, evaluated by internal censorship on a pass/fail basis. (13011912)
  2. Written exam, evaluated by external examiner by the danish 7 mark scale (5 ECTS. (13011902)
Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 24 hours
Skills training phase: 24 hours, hereof:
 - Tutorials: 24 hours

Educational activities Study phase: 10 hours

Language
This course is taught in Danish or English, depending on the lecturer. However, if international students participate, the teaching language will always be English.
