The content of MM501 Calculus I and MM502 Calculus II, MM505 Linear Algebra and DM502 Programming A must be known.
Course introductionThe student should be shown examples of mathematical modeling in science and engineering within the topics of this course (see below) and should learn to analyze and solve these problems numerically.
Expected learning outcomeAt the end of the course the student will be able to:
- identify and apply mathematical models and concepts to explain, analyse and estimate physical and technical problems
- correctly apply mathematical models to explain and predict the behaviour of the modelled system
- compare different mathematical models and methods, and discuss their advantages and disadvantages
- solve mathematical problems using numerical methods, including planning and completing of the numerical calculations
- analyze and assess the result of a numerical calculation in relation to the original problem, including identification and estimation of possible sources of error
Subject overview- solution of linear and nonlinear systems of equations
- numerical integration and differentiation
- simple integral and ordinary differential equations
- estimation of error for iterative methods and discretization methods
