Academic preconditions:
Academic preconditions. Students taking the course are expected to:
  • Have knowledge of elementary enzyme kinetics
  • Be able to use elementary computer software
 


Course introduction
The aim of the course is to enable the student to simulate dynamical biological processes, which is important in regard to understand how life is organized on a temporal level

The course builds on the knowledge acquired in the courses Fundamental biochemistry (BMB532) or Basic biochemistry (BMB530), and gives an academic basis for studying the topics Regulation of metabolism and Cell signaling, that are part of the degree.

In relation to the competence profile of the degree it is the explicit focus of the course to:

  • Give the competence to formulate models of biological processes 
  • Give skills in Systems Dynamics and Systems Biology 
  • Give knowledge and understanding of how mathematical models and computers can be used to solve biological problems

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
  1. Project repport (5 ECTS). Internal evaluation. Marks according to the Danish 7-scale. (01016202).
Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 20 hours
Skills training phase: 30 hours, hereof:
 - Tutorials: 10 hours
 - Laboratory exercises: 20 hours

Educational activities
  • Solving minor modelling projects
  • Writing report of project
 
Educational form
The introphase consists of lectures, where the teacher introduces central topics of the course, but in a close dialogue with the students. Practical examples of modeling studies are carried out jointly.

In the training phase the students work more or less independently with first small modeling problems and later with the final project. In this phase the teacher functions as an assistant who helps answering critical questions.

In the study phase the students work independently with solving small simulation projects and with writing the final report.

Language
This course is taught in English, if international students participate. Otherwise the course is taught in Danish.

Remarks
The course has limited seats and in case of too many applications, priority is given to the timely registration by date of registration.
