Course introductionIn this course the students learn basic algebraic concepts. These include linearity, which is fundamental in all areas of mathematics and its applications. In addition rings and their basic properties are introduced.
QualificationsProblem solving, understanding principles of mathematical thinking, argumentation and ability to carry out and understand proofs, ability to handle abstract mathematical concepts, ability to present in written form precise mathematical arguments.
Expected learning outcomeBy the end of the course the students are expected to be able to:
- apply techniques and results from linear algebra and algebra to solve problems within the syllabus of the course
- argue for the individual steps in the solutions
- formulate correct arguments
- use mathematical terminology
Subject overview
- Systems of linear equations
- matrices, determinants
