KursusintroduktionThis cross-faculty course explores what business development is (not), what business developers do, and what characterizes good, structured and effective business development. The aim is on preparing a professional business plan based on the participants' actual business idea.
Rather than exploring theoretical depth, the course focuses on a generalist practitioner perspective on integrating knowledge from specialist disciplines and applying this in actual business development and innovation management context.
Forventet læringsudbytteBy participating in this course the participants are expected to be able to demonstrate good command of and being able to integrate the central concepts, processes, models and theories of the business development, entrepreneurship and innovation as well as management and marketing literatures. In this respect, they must be able to:
- understand and descripe the concept of business development at two levels: as a necessary skill of an entrepreneur and as a distinct business function in the established firm.
- understand and describe the business development process.
- understand, describe and evaluate the theories that represent the generel management and marketing literature.
- conduct a business plan, including a marketing plan, organization plan and finance plan, based on an actual business idea.
EmneoversigtThe course is developed around a cross faculty setting, inviting students from all faculties of University of Southern Denmark. The structure of the course is based upon 3 modules, where two modules (1 and 3) are shared and 1 module (2.A and 2.B) is specialized. The specialized module is differentiated between students based on prior knowledge about at least bachelor-level business administration.

- Business development
- Business models and business plans
- Entrepreneurship and innovation
- The market-oriented business venture
Module 2.A: Innovation management (Participants with business administration background)
- Fundamentals of innovations
- Technology, innovation, and strategic change
- Analyze and evaluate the technology landscape
Module 2.B: The business developer's toolbox (Participants without business administration background)
- Strategic management
- Value creation (Environment, Resources, and Organization)
- Marketing management and market research
Module 3: The business plan (all academic disciplines)
- Value appropriation (legal issues, property rights, patents, etc.)
- Marketing and market forecasting (the marketing plan).
- Organizational development (the organizational plan)
- Finance and sources of venture finance (the finance plan)

The three assignments have to be passed in the same semester. Assignments are only offered in the term where the course is taught. The assignments are to be solved individually. The assignments are evaluated internally on a pass/fail basis.

The course is evaluated in the basis of a final 100% term paper - a business plan of max. 25 pages plus appendices based on an actual product or services (may be written in groups of max. 4 persons). It must clearly be stated, who is responsible for which part to make an individual evaluation possible.

The aim of the course is obtained through lectures, cf. the *Content - key areas' above, including guest lectures by business people and other specialists within the relevant theoretical and practical domains.
The course includes three assignments. The purpose of the assignments is to test the student in one or more targets in depth. Parts of the three assignment, particularly the late-term assignment, may be integrated in the final term paper.
Lectures: 45 hours.
Preparation: 105 hours.
Preparation and making of the 3 assignments: 60 hours.
Preparation and making of term paper: 60 hours.
In total: 270 hours.
