Prerequisites:
A Bachelor’s degree in Biomedicine.

Academic preconditions:
Students taking the course are expected to have knowledge of anatomy, medical physiology, immunology, biochemistry and molecular biology.

Course introduction
The aim of the course is to enable the student to understand the most important disease mechanisms at the cellular, sub-cellular and molecular level, which is important in relation to explain how diseases and disease complexes present themselves on a macroscopic pathological and clinical level.

The course builds on the knowledge acquired in the courses SU501 Anatomy, SU502 Medical physiology, BMB512 Theoretical immunology and BMB514 Immunological techniques, and gives an academic basis for the choice of master project that is a part of the degree.

In relation to the competence profile of the degree it is the explicit focus of the course to:

  • Give knowledge and understanding of the current understanding of the pathophysiology of main disease and discuss the limitations of that knowledge.
  • Give the competence to present examples of diseases in which thorough knowledge of the cellular and molecular pathophysiology exists, and discuss how this knowledge is obtained (methods and assumptions).
  • Give skills in communication between biochemists / molecular biologists and workers in the medical and health sector.


Expected learning outcome
The learning objectives of the course are that the student demonstrates the ability to:
  • Explain the most important disease mechanisms at the cellular, sub cellular and molecular level and thus explain how diseases and disease complexes present themselves on a macroscopic pathological and clinical level.
  • Explain the present pathophysiological knowledge on the most important disease and discuss the limitations of that knowledge.
  • Describe examples of diseases in which thorough knowledge of the cellular and molecular pathophysiology is known, and discuss how this knowledge is obtained (methods and assumptions).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
  1. Written exam without exam aids. Graded by Danish 7-mark scale and external examiner. Allowed IT-tools: Microsoft Word, drawing software (Microsoft Paint or the like) and hand scanner. (15 ECTS). (29003502).
Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 110 hours
Skills training phase: 25 hours, hereof:
 - Tutorials: 25 hours

This course is taught in Danish or English, depending on the lecturer. However, if international students participate, the teaching language will always be English.
