Academic preconditions:
BMB506 Protein chemistry, BMB502 Enzymes and membranes, BMB504 Fundamental Molecular Biology and BMB503 Fundamental Biochemistry assumed known.
Course introductionGive students an understanding of selected biochemical techniques to determine biomolecular structure and function as well as spatial distribution of biomolecules and molecular complexes in cells.
Give the principles of - and practical experience with - separation and characterization techniques for isolation of macromolecules.
Introduce absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy and mass spectrometry methods used in modern biochemistry and molecular cell biology, including practical work and demonstrations.

- Introduction to microscopical optics and computer-assisted image analysis
- Separation of biomolecules based on physicochemical properties by chromatography or electrophoresis
- Introduction into light absorption and fluorescence phenomena as basis for fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy
- Detection and characterization of biomolecules by microscopy, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry
- Visualization and localization of biomolecules in cells by microscopy techniques.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None
Assessment and marking:
(a) Lab erxercises, pass/fail, internal evaluation by the teacher. Participation is a requirement for admission to exam.
(b) Oral exam with marks according to the Danish 7-point scale and internal examiner.

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Lectures (30 h), 4 h examinatorials and 16 h laboratory demonstrations/exercises.
