Academic preconditions:
BB508 Animal and plantbiology and BMB501 Biomolecular Chemistry must be passed BMB503 Fundamental biochemistry must be followed.
Course introductionTo introduce basic toxicological terms and analytical tevhniques
Expected learning outcomeAfter participation in the course the student is expected to be able to:
- Assess toxicological data for pharmaceuticals including extrapolation from animal to human data
- Predict metabolites of compounds based on their chemical structure
- Describe the toxic mechanisms of model compounds on the physioloical and molecular level
- Evaluate chromatographic data from the litterature
Subject overview- Dose-response relationships
-Uptake, distribution, metabolism and excretion of xenobiotica
- the P450 system
- Toxic mechanisms (biochemical/molecular level)
- Extrapolation of toxicolgical data from animal experiments to humans
In the laboratory part the analytical techniques relevant for toxicology is introduced:
- Chromatographic techniques (LC, HPLC, gel eletrophoresis)
- Immunochemical techniques (ELISA)
